DK Shivakumar to Take Oath as Karnataka Reaches 34 Chief Ministerial Tenures

BENGALURU — DK Shivakumar is scheduled to take the oath of office as the new Chief Minister of Karnataka on Wednesday. This transition will officially mark the state's 34th chief ministerial tenure since India gained Independence.

This upcoming milestone places Karnataka into an exclusive and politically significant category of Indian states characterized by exceptionally high leadership turnover. With this transition, Karnataka's frequency of government changes will be on par with only two other states in the country: Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, which are historically known for frequent changes in government.

The record of 34 tenures highlights a local political history that has been heavily defined by intense competition, shifting political alliances, various coalition experiments, and periodic bouts of instability.

Historically, dating back to the days of the erstwhile Mysore state, Karnataka has seen 23 different individuals serve in the role of Chief Minister. These individuals have spanned a total of 33 distinct chief ministerial tenures. When Shivakumar takes his oath on Wednesday, he will officially become the 24th individual to hold the state's highest executive office, initiating the 34th tenure in Karnataka's history.

In addition to the frequent changes in chief ministers, Karnataka's political history of instability is also reflected in its record of direct central administration. The state has undergone eight separate spells of President's Rule since Independence. According to historical records, these periods of President's Rule were instituted in the years 1962, 1967, 1972, 1978, 1989, 1990, and 2007.

By reaching its 34th chief ministerial tenure, Karnataka joins Uttar Pradesh and Bihar as the only states to experience this level of executive turnover, underscoring the highly competitive and fluid nature of the state's political environment as Shivakumar prepares to assume office.
