Woman Drowns 4-Month-Old Twins, Attempts Suicide in Vajarahalli

A 40-year-old woman allegedly drowned her four-month-old twin daughters before attempting to take her own life at their home in Vajarahalli on Tuesday. Police stated that the woman, identified as Umadevi, had been undergoing treatment for postpartum depression and mental health issues following the birth of the infants through in vitro fertilisation (IVF).

According to a police complaint filed by her husband, Ramelingappa SH, a 50-year-old realtor, the couple had been married since May 8, 2002. After remaining childless for several years, they opted for IVF treatment, and Umadevi subsequently gave birth to twin girls at a private hospital on May 5.

Police said that approximately one-and-a-half months after the delivery, Umadevi began showing disinterest in the children. She started behaving abnormally and repeatedly asked family members to admit her to an ashram.

Following these behavioral changes, the family sought psychiatric treatment for her at hospitals in Raghuvanahalli and at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS). Doctors attributed her condition to postpartum depression and severe hormonal changes resulting from childbirth.

The incident came to light on Tuesday afternoon when Ramelingappa returned to the house and found the room locked. Upon opening the door, he discovered his wife hanging inside. Umadevi was taken to a hospital for emergency treatment, while the couple's twin daughters were found dead inside the room.
