Woman Booked for Murder of 4-Month-Old Twin Daughters in Bengaluru's Vajarahalli

The Thalaghattapura police have registered a case of murder against a 40-year-old woman for allegedly drowning her four-month-old twin daughters before attempting suicide at her residence in Vajarahalli in south Bengaluru on Tuesday, September 1.

The accused, identified as Umadevi, was allegedly found attempting to hang herself in a room at the house. Her twin daughters were found dead inside the same room.

According to the complaint filed by her husband, Ramalingappa, 50, the family had been living in BCCHS Layout in Vajarahalli for around 10 years. The couple had undergone IVF treatment, following which Umadevi gave birth to the twin girls at Cloudnine Hospital on May 5, 2026.

The complaint stated that about one-and-a-half months after the delivery, Umadevi began showing disinterest in caring for the children and repeatedly said that they should be sent to an ashram.

The family subsequently took her for psychiatric treatment at NIMHANS. Doctors reportedly informed the family that her behaviour could be linked to postpartum depression and hormonal imbalance.

On Tuesday afternoon, when Ramalingappa returned home, he found a room locked from the inside. After forcing it open, he allegedly found Umadevi attempting to hang herself with a veil. She was rescued and taken for medical treatment.

The twin girls were found dead inside the same room. Doctors who examined the children suspect that they died due to drowning.

Based on the complaint filed by Ramalingappa, the Thalaghattapura police registered a case under Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita against Umadevi. Police suspect that she drowned the infants before attempting to end her own life.
