Vidyaranyapura man arrested for killing mother-in-law with axe over dowry

A 45-year-old woman died on Sunday after being attacked with an axe by her son-in-law over a dowry dispute near Medi Agrahara in Vidyaranyapura, Bengaluru.
The accused, identified as a labourer named Akbar, has been arrested by the Yelahanka New Town Police in connection with the murder. The attack occurred on Friday, July 10, following ongoing demands for gold.
The deceased, Roshan Bi, had been residing with her children in Vidyaranyapura after her family relocated to Bengaluru from Surpur taluk in Yadgir district approximately seven years ago.
According to the police and the victim's family, Akbar had been demanding two tolas of gold for his three-month-old son. He had reportedly threatened to kill Roshan Bi if his demands were not met. On July 10, Akbar allegedly carried out the threat, striking Roshan Bi with an axe and causing severe injuries.
Local residents rushed Roshan Bi to a nearby private hospital immediately after the attack. Despite receiving treatment, she succumbed to her injuries on Sunday.
Following her death, the Yelahanka New Town Police registered a murder case against Akbar and arrested him.
The suspect's wife, Ramzan Bi, revealed that she had been subjected to severe dowry harassment since their marriage seven years ago. The couple had eloped when Ramzan Bi was studying in class 7 in their native village. Although the family initially opposed it, they eventually accepted the marriage because the two were relatives. The couple has a four-year-old daughter and a three-month-old son.
Ramzan Bi alleged that the harassment intensified significantly after the birth of their second child. Akbar repeatedly demanded that her family provide two tolas of gold. She also claimed that Akbar had previously attempted to set her on fire by pouring kerosene on her and had frequently threatened her family members.
