Veteran Theatre Artiste Indira Nair Passes Away in Mysuru at 76

Veteran theatre artiste and actor Indira Nair passed away following a heart attack on Friday. She was 76 years old and is survived by her two sons.

Her mortal remains will be kept for members of the public to pay their last respects at her residence located on 4th Main Road, 2nd Stage, Bogadi, until 11 am on Saturday, August 29. In accordance with her wishes, her body will subsequently be handed over to the Mysore Medical College and Research Institute (MMC & RI) for medical education and research. The process for her eye donation has already been completed.

A speech and hearing specialist by profession, Nair built an extensive body of artistic work across theatre, short films, and Kannada and Malayalam feature films. Her journey in theatre began during her college days with performances at the All India Institute of Speech and Hearing (AIISH), where she took part in numerous state-level theatre festivals and won several awards.

After completing her formal education, Nair actively participated in stage productions staged by the Samatento theatre troupe. Following her marriage, family responsibilities kept her away from active stage performance for nearly 35 years. Driven by her enduring dedication to theatre, she returned to the stage in 2010.

Over the last 15 years, Nair worked continuously in Mysuru's theatre circuit, serving as a lead actress, theatre organiser, and activist. Among her most prominent theatrical works was 'Neermadalada Hoovinondige', a solo performance based on the life of renowned writer Kamala Das.

Her other notable theatrical performances include roles in plays such as 'Bhoothagalu', 'Huliya Neralu', 'Andha Gandhara', 'Purushartha', 'Berilladavaru', 'Cocktail Party', 'Rudali', 'Sonata', 'Kadadida Neeru', 'Madriya Chite', and 'Stree Sambhrama'.
