V. Somanna lays foundation for ₹5.5 crore pedestrian subway behind Mantri Mall

On July 6, Union Minister of State for Railways V. Somanna laid the foundation stone for a new pedestrian subway behind Mantri Mall in Bengaluru to provide a safe passage across the railway tracks. The ₹5.5 crore infrastructure project, managed by the South Western Railway (SWR), is designed to prevent trespassing and enhance the safety of train operations in the area.

The proposed subway will measure 5 metres by 2.65 metres. According to South Western Railway, the new structure will provide a safe and convenient passage for pedestrians who need to cross the railway tracks. The project is expected to directly benefit the residents of several surrounding localities, including Seshadripuram, Okalipuram, Srirampura, and Malleswaram.

Speaking at the foundation stone laying ceremony, Mr. Somanna highlighted that the project addresses a long-standing public need. He stated that the new pedestrian subway will significantly improve safety for people navigating the area.

The Minister also noted that the Central Government is bearing 100% of the cost for Road Over Bridge (ROB) and Road Under Bridge (RUB) projects. This funding model is intended to accelerate the overall development of railway infrastructure across the network. As part of these ongoing efforts, Mr. Somanna shared that work on the Road Under Bridge at Ramohalli Gate near Kengeri is currently progressing well and is expected to be completed soon.

Furthermore, Mr. Somanna provided updates on other major railway development projects within Karnataka. He noted that the redevelopment of the Bengaluru Cantonment railway station is currently underway at an estimated cost of ₹485 crore. Additionally, development work at the Yesvantpur Junction railway station is progressing rapidly.

Other future plans mentioned by the Minister include a proposed coaching terminal at Yelahanka. Priority is also being given to the Tumakuru–Davanagere and Rayadurga–Tumakuru railway line projects, while plans are being prepared for a new direct railway line connecting Bengaluru and Kolar via Hosakote, Narasapura, and Vemagal.
