UT Khader Proposes Junk Food Ban in Government Hospital Canteens

The Karnataka Health Department is currently considering a major policy proposal to ban the sale of junk food in canteens located inside government hospital campuses across the state, while also planning an upgrade of its testing laboratory in Bengaluru. Health and Family Welfare Minister UT Khader announced the details of the proposal, highlighting that the primary goal of the ban is to actively promote healthier eating habits.
Under this proposed initiative, hospital canteens would be permitted to sell only healthy food options. These meals and snacks must be provided to patients, visitors, and staff at affordable prices.
If the state government officially approves the plan, the new regulations will be implemented across all government-run healthcare facilities throughout the state. Alongside the measures inside hospital canteens, the government is also discussing potential restrictions on the sale of junk food around schools.
These proposed restrictions would apply to the immediate areas surrounding schools that cater to students from Classes 1 to 10. Minister Khader argued that restricting access to unhealthy food near educational institutions is vital, as ensuring children have access to nutritious food from an early age can help shape positive, lifelong dietary habits.
The Health Department's push to curb junk food consumption is driven by a rising concern over non-communicable diseases. Minister Khader specifically cited the increasing prevalence of serious conditions, such as cancer and kidney failure, as a key reason for the government's intervention in public dietary habits.
To support these enforcement and monitoring efforts, the Health Department plans to upgrade its existing laboratory facility in Bengaluru. The upgraded Bengaluru laboratory will be utilized to test the specific ingredients used in junk food products sold to the public. The entire proposal is currently under discussion and consideration by the state health authorities before a final decision is made.
