Tyrant film shoot paused in Los Angeles after nearby shooting at World Cup watch party

The film shoot for the upcoming thriller 'Tyrant', starring Charlize Theron and Demi Moore, was temporarily paused and the cast and crew were sent home following a nearby shooting in Koreatown, Los Angeles. The incident, which occurred during a FIFA World Cup watch party, was reported on June 20, 2026.

The shooting took place during a large gathering in Koreatown, where football fans had assembled to watch Mexico play against South Korea. One person was shot during the watch party, and a suspect was subsequently arrested by the police.

While the Los Angeles Police Department did not issue an official evacuation order for the film sets, the production team chose to halt work and send the team home as a precautionary measure.

The shutdown affected several of the film's high-profile stars who were present on or near the sets. Along with lead actors Charlize Theron and Demi Moore, the film's cast also includes Julia Garner and Hudson Williams.

The production team's decision to halt filming proved timely, as police officers later issued a citywide tactical alert. This alert allowed additional police officers to be deployed to the Koreatown neighborhood to assist with crowd control efforts. The football match itself ended with Mexico taking a 1-0 victory over South Korea.

'Tyrant' is written and directed by David Weil, marking his feature directorial debut. The project is based on a story by Weil and Cody Behan. The film is described as having shades of 'Wall Street' and 'Whiplash', with its story set in the high-end culinary world of New York City.

Lead actor Charlize Theron was most recently seen in the OTT film 'Apex'. She is also scheduled to feature in a lead role in the upcoming Christopher Nolan film 'The Odyssey', which is slated to hit theatres on July 17.
