Two Missing Greenfield Links Delay Full Completion of Bengaluru Ring Road

Bengaluru's 288-km Satellite Town Ring Road project remains short of functioning as a complete continuous orbital corridor due to two unfinished greenfield links, despite substantial progress across several packages connecting Dabaspet, Doddaballapur, and Hoskote.
Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari provided the project details in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha. The orbital highway spans approximately 288 km, comprising 243 km in Karnataka and 45 km in Tamil Nadu, and is being executed across six distinct packages.
While several key segments are either finished or close to completion, two greenfield stretches remain essential to diverting freight and long-distance traffic away from Bengaluru's core road network. The 42-km Dabaspet-Doddaballapur bypass on NH-648 is complete, while the 38-km Doddaballapur-Hoskote section has reached 99.2 percent completion. Additionally, a 7-km overlapping stretch with the Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway has been finished.
Work on the remaining greenfield corridors is still underway. The 21-km Karnataka-Tamil Nadu border greenfield link is 94.89 percent complete and is scheduled for completion by November 2026. The 35.76-km Belagondapalli-border stretch located in Tamil Nadu is 91.32 percent complete, with a targeted completion deadline of September 2026.
The central government has spent Rs 6,120.5 crore on various works under the project so far. Expenditure includes Rs 1,294.84 crore on the Dabaspet-Doddaballapur section, Rs 1,366.3 crore on the Doddaballapur-Hoskote stretch, and Rs 1,153.14 crore on the greenfield NH-648 segment. The overlapping Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway section accounts for Rs 1,223.84 crore, while Rs 776.99 crore has been spent on work in Tamil Nadu.
Land acquisition across the project involves 19,218 people and covers 1,791.46 hectares. The 144-km Obalapura-S Mudugadapalli stretch constitutes the largest share, affecting 10,917 people across 984.38 hectares. The Doddaballapur-Hoskote section covers 3,224 people and 329.69 hectares, while the Tamil Nadu-Karnataka border-Hoskote section involves 1,340 people and 137.08 hectares. The Belagondapalli-border section involves 3,074 people and 240.13 hectares.
The Karnataka government agreed to bear 30 percent of the land acquisition cost for its portion, estimated at roughly Rs 6,117 crore, having deposited Rs 518.32 crore so far. The Centre is funding the entire cost for the Tamil Nadu portion, where land acquisition is estimated at Rs 1,261 crore.
