Transport Glitches and Bus Delays Hit Visitors at Bengaluru Freedom Habba

The first-ever Freedom Habba organised around Vidhana Soudha on Independence Day drew thousands of citizens into central Bengaluru, but major transport hurdles and a lack of clear communication from the BMTC left many visitors stranded as the celebrations concluded.

Conceived by Greater Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda and backed by Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, the event sought to transform the national holiday into a broad, people-centric festival. The initiative brought thousands of families, children, and community members to the heart of the city and was viewed as a potential 'Bengaluru Model' for other states seeking to involve the public in Independence Day celebrations.

However, significant gaps in planning for last-mile movement and crowd management became evident as the public began to disperse. Large groups of attendees gathered at key bus stops along Cunningham Road, Queen’s Road, and Vasanth Nagar to find their way home, only to encounter unusually long wait times.

Under normal conditions, BMTC buses arrive at these central stops within five to eight minutes. On Saturday, many commuters were forced to wait for nearly an hour. When buses finally reached the stops, several passengers found that the arriving vehicles were operating on altered routes and did not match the services they expected.

A key factor behind the disruption was the absence of clear public updates regarding transit adjustments. While the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation had issued an advance advisory informing commuters about the closure of the Dr BR Ambedkar (Vidhana Soudha) Metro station, BMTC did not release an equivalent advisory detailing route changes and diversions for the event.

The resulting commuter distress highlighted the need for improved transit alternatives, clearer public advisories, and stronger crowd-management protocols at entry and exit points for future editions of the event.
