Suyash Kumar to Lead Whitefield Heritage Walk Exploring History Dating Back to 1882

A heritage walking tour led by history enthusiast Suyash Kumar will take place in the Whitefield neighborhood on June 28 at 9:00 AM. The event is designed to uncover the overlooked history, nature, and cultural narratives of the area, challenging the common perception of the locality.
While Whitefield is often dismissed by modern residents as a purely contemporary IT suburb, Kumar aims to introduce its rich history, which actually dates back to 1882. The concept for this historical walk first sparked around October 2024 when organizers realized there was a major gap in the public's understanding of the neighborhood's origins. Kumar noted that people frequently assume Whitefield has no real history, a stereotype he hopes to dismantle.
During the walk, participants will be introduced to various historic landmarks and forgotten cultural memories. To curate this experience, Kumar collected information from the Mysore Gazette, historical books, newspaper archives, and oral histories provided by local residents.
One of the primary highlights of the upcoming tour is the Waverly Inn. As one of the oldest standing buildings in Whitefield, the inn is a significant historical site, though it currently lies abandoned amid ongoing legal disputes. Kumar shared that there are numerous stories regarding the building's connection with Winston Churchill, although this remains an oral tale rather than a documented fact.
Another key stop on the heritage walk is Meersaab, a historic general store established in 1915. The store once served as a crucial commercial center, supplying goods to nearly 50 surrounding villages.
The walk is organized to help residents connect with local history through these physical landmarks and oral storytelling. For more details on how to join the tour, interested participants can visit the Instagram page @bengaluruprayana.
