Sirsi Circle Flyover Set for Rs 9.6 Crore Makeover in Bengaluru

The Bengaluru Central City Corporation (BCCC) is preparing a Detailed Project Report for a Rs 9.6 crore comprehensive maintenance and resurfacing project on the Sirsi Circle flyover, a key arterial link connecting central Bengaluru to the Mysuru Road corridor. Officially named the Balagangadharanatha Swamiji Flyover, the nearly three-decade-old structure is set for a major maintenance exercise after a gap of six years.

The DPR for the proposed project is scheduled for completion by the end of September or early October. The civic body's decision to allocate funds and initiate repair work comes against the backdrop of visible deterioration across the flyover's surface, alongside persistent complaints from regular commuters regarding waterlogging during heavy rainfall, clogged drainage systems, and vegetation growing in nooks and corners of the structure.

Speaking about the upcoming project, BCCC Chief Engineer Vijaykumar Haridas confirmed that the flyover was last asphalted and subjected to major maintenance in 2020. Over the subsequent years, the asphalt surface has progressively deteriorated, creating an urgent need for fresh resurfacing across the main stretch as well as its access ramps.

Spanning 2.65 kilometers, the Sirsi Circle flyover was inaugurated in 1998 as Bengaluru's very first flyover. Due to its critical role in handling daily commuter traffic over one of the city's busiest junctions, civic authorities have confirmed that the entire flyover will not be shut down at any point during the maintenance drive.

Instead, the BCCC plans to execute the work in phased steps over a timeline of at least two months once physical work begins. Throughout the maintenance period, one side of the flyover will remain open to vehicular movement at all times to minimize traffic disruption along the heavy transit corridor.

Under the scope of work outlined by the chief engineer, the initial phase will involve milling down the existing damaged asphalt layer across the flyover and its ramps. Once the top surface is removed, workers will lay a fresh asphalt layer, replace all existing bearings and expansion joints, remove overgrown plants, and carry out cleaning and allied maintenance tasks.
