Shivakumar Launches Hebbal Junction Twin Tunnel and Elevated Corridor Work

On June 27, 2026, Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar and Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda participated in the official groundbreaking ceremony for a new three-lane short transitory twin tunnel and elevated corridor starting from Hebbal Junction. The infrastructure project is designed to resolve long-standing traffic bottlenecks in Hebbal and its neighbouring residential and commercial areas.
The development will span from Hebbal Junction to the Karnataka Veterinary, Animal, and Fisheries University (KVAFSU) and extend further to Mehkri Circle. The Bengaluru Traffic Police originally suggested the initiative to help ease the heavy traffic congestion that regularly impacts commuter movement in nearby areas such as Ganganagar, Sanjay Nagar, and R.T. Nagar.
According to the project specifications, the construction will feature a 2.27-kilometre short transitory twin tunnel. In addition to the twin tunnel, an elevated corridor will be built to connect the route from the KVAFSU campus to Mehkri Circle. The Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) is the designated implementing agency for the infrastructure project.
The BDA recently finalized the contract for the project, and the appointed contractor has already carried out initial soil testing along the proposed alignment. This milestone follows a lengthy administrative process. The Karnataka Cabinet had initially granted administrative approval for the tunnel and corridor project in December 2025.
Securing a contractor for the project proved challenging for the Bangalore Development Authority. Tenders had to be called twice because no contractors showed interest during the first round of bidding. Despite some initial opposition to the project from members of the public, the state government continued to back the plan, citing the positive impact that short tunnels can have in reducing micro-level traffic congestion in busy urban sectors.
