Pep Munoz Outlines Squad Rebuild as Bengaluru FC Prepare for New ISL Season

Bengaluru FC have chosen a measured approach to their preparations for the upcoming Indian Super League campaign, with head coach Pep Munoz focusing on rebuilding the squad's Indian core while targeting a full complement of overseas signings.
The Blues have already brought in three foreign recruits: Spanish attacker Borja Martinez, Portuguese centre-back Sandro Embalo, and Argentine midfielder Manuel de Iriondo. However, following a thin squad during last season's truncated run and the departure of experienced India international defender Rahul Bheke alongside others, strengthening domestic options remains a priority before the transfer window shuts.
Speaking to Deccan Herald, the 47-year-old Spanish head coach emphasized that he is seeking depth and quality across the pitch.
“We want two players for each position,” Munoz said. “If we don't sign local players, it is because we want players who are better than what we have and can improve the squad. We have good young players coming from the academy, but we are always open to experienced Indian players from other teams.”
Munoz expects academy graduates Ricky Meetei, Soham Varshneya, and Shivaldo Singh to take another step forward and play central roles in the squad this season.
On the foreign recruitment front, Bengaluru FC intend to utilize their full foreign-player allowance to remain competitive against rivals such as Mohun Bagan and East Bengal. Munoz noted that teams with six foreign players held a distinct advantage at the top of the table last season.
As part of their pre-season strategy, the club has opted out of the Durand Cup for a second straight year to manage player workload amid lingering uncertainty over the ISL start date. After completing a short conditioning camp at Ballari, the team returned to their Bengaluru base, where they are playing friendlies and continuing training rather than heading abroad.
