Only 5 Bengaluru Urban Govt College Students Place in CET Engineering Top 1,000

Only five government pre-university (PU) college students from Bengaluru Urban secured ranks within the top 1,000 in the engineering stream of the Karnataka Common Entrance Test (CET), according to data released by the Karnataka Examinations Authority on June 6, 2026. The newly released figures highlight a significant educational disparity, as private college students dominated the top ranks across the state.

Only one government PU college student managed to break into the top 10 across all seven streams of the entrance test. Basavaraj Avati from Vijayapura secured the fourth rank in veterinary sciences. Every other top-10 rank holder across all seven streams was a student from a private college.

According to the Karnataka Examinations Authority, only 12 engineering students from government PU colleges featured in the top 1,000 ranks statewide. Aside from the five students from Bengaluru Urban, this group included two students each from Dakshina Kannada and Uttara Kannada, and one student each from Chitradurga, Kalaburgi, and Mysuru.

In other streams, government PU college representation in the top 1,000 was similarly low. Only 15 government college students made the top 1,000 in BNYS, followed by 13 in agriculture, 11 in pharma, and 10 each in veterinary sciences and nursing.

As the rank threshold widened, the presence of government college students remained low. In the top 5,000 ranks, the number of government college students ranged from 39 in veterinary sciences to 53 in engineering. Across the top 10,000 ranks, only 108 government college students featured.

The data also revealed low representation for rural students. Only 79 rural students secured ranks in the top 1,000, while 499 placed in the top 5,000, and 1,292 made it into the top 10,000.
