Only 12 Government PU College Students Make Top 1,000 Karnataka CET Engineering Ranks

BENGALURU — Only a small number of students from government pre-university (PU) colleges managed to secure top ranks in the Karnataka Common Entrance Test (CET), according to data released by the Karnataka Examinations Authority. The results highlight a performance gap between government and private institutions, with five of the top-performing government college students hailing from Bengaluru Urban.
Among the top 10 rank holders across seven distinct streams, only a single government PU college student made the list. Basavaraj Avati, a student from Vijayapura, secured the fourth rank in veterinary sciences. Every other top-10 rank holder across all streams belonged to private colleges.
The disparity was also visible in the top 1,000 ranks. For the engineering stream, only 12 students from government PU colleges managed to secure a spot in the top 1,000. Aside from the five students from Bengaluru Urban, the remaining top-performing government students included two each from Dakshina Kannada and Uttara Kannada, and one each from Chitradurga, Kalaburgi, and Mysuru.
Other streams also saw low representation from government PU colleges within the top 1,000 ranks. There were 15 students in BNYS, 13 in agriculture, 11 in pharma, and 10 each in veterinary sciences and nursing who achieved ranks within the top 1,000.
As the rank threshold widened, the numbers remained relatively low. In the top 5,000 ranks, the number of government PU college students ranged from 39 in veterinary sciences to 53 in engineering. Across the top 10,000 ranks, only 108 government PU college students featured.
The data also highlighted the performance of rural students in the state-level entrance examination. Only 79 rural students secured ranks in the top 1,000. This number rose to 499 in the top 5,000 and reached 1,292 in the top 10,000 ranks.
