MP Office Renovation Debris Blocks Footpath On Bengaluru's Ali Askar Road

Pedestrians on Ali Askar Road in Bengaluru have raised concerns after heaps of construction and demolition (C&D) waste were dumped on the footpath outside a building housing the offices of three Rajya Sabha members.

The building accommodates the offices of Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Congress MP GC Chandrashekar, and BJP MP Lehar Singh Siroya. Renovation work was being carried out at Chandrashekar’s office on Saturday, with workers continuing renovation tasks and storing construction material beneath the staircase.

However, the contractor managing the renovation failed to arrange for the debris to be transported to a designated disposal site. Instead, piles of construction waste were left on the public footpath directly in front of the building, obstructing movement and making it difficult for people to walk along the stretch. An empty beer bottle was also found discarded near a tree adjacent to the entrance gate. When questioned about the debris, workers on-site claimed they did not know who had dumped the waste outside.

Local pedestrians expressed frustration over the violation of civic norms and questioned why action had not been taken immediately against those responsible.

“It is quite disturbing to see heaps of garbage and C&D waste on the footpath. The authorities take action immediately against eateries and shops for dumping waste on the footpath. I do not know why they are silent to penalize those responsible for dumping waste on the footpath,” said Keshava Murthy, a pedestrian.

Another pedestrian, Puneeth Kumar, pointed out that the walkway had become hostile to foot traffic and called on the Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited (BSWML) to take strict action against violators creating black spots on public paths.

Responding to the complaints, Shankar S, Supervisor of Marshals for the Shivajinagar area, stated that he had intervened and instructed the contractor to clear the debris. According to Shankar, the contractor gave an assurance that the C&D waste would be removed by the following evening.

Additionally, BSWML Assistant General Manager Rudramuni said that he would direct a civic marshal to the location to ensure the footpath is completely cleared of the renovation waste.
