Mathikere to get 1.2 km double-decker road and suburban rail flyover

A 1.2-kilometre double-decker structure is set to be constructed along Mohan Kumar Road between Mathikere and Yeshwanthpur in Bengaluru to accommodate both road and suburban rail infrastructure within a single corridor. The project represents a key engineering feature for Corridor-2 of the Bengaluru Suburban Transport Project, which connects Benniganahalli to Chikkabanavara, according to details published in the latest newsletter from the Rail Infrastructure Development Company (Karnataka) Limited.

The planned double-decker structure features two distinct vertical levels designed to maximize transit capacity along the heavily built-up alignment. The first level will serve as a dedicated road flyover to facilitate vehicular traffic and streamline movement in the local area. Directly above the road flyover, the second level will carry the elevated rail viaduct designed for Corridor-2 of the suburban rail network.

The Rail Infrastructure Development Company (Karnataka) Limited highlighted that the decision to stack the two transport modes is tailored to address severe right-of-way limitations in the densely developed Mathikere-Yeshwanthpur stretch. By combining vehicular and railway corridors onto the same footprint along Mohan Kumar Road, the project aims to optimize limited urban space while curbing the need for additional land acquisition.

Corridor-2 is expected to serve as a flagship stretch for the broader Bengaluru Suburban Transport Project initiative. According to the newsletter, the very first suburban rail rolling stock under the BSTP project is scheduled to operate on this corridor's tracks, delivering a major boost to public transportation options for commuters across the city.

In addition to preserving urban land, the integrated double-decker approach is intended to simultaneously improve road traffic conditions and expand overall public transit capacity. Project organizers view the double-decker arrangement as a key engineering solution for integrating diverse transport modes within a tightly constrained city environment, ensuring that critical new infrastructure maintains a minimal physical footprint.

The 1.2-km double-decker design in Mathikere underscores ongoing efforts under the Bengaluru Suburban Transport Project to build efficient, multi-tiered transit infrastructure while addressing space constraints across critical city corridors like the Mathikere and Yeshwanthpur stretch.
