Mangaluru Band Curry Releases Kannada EP Suprabhatha Ahead of Bengaluru Show

Mangaluru-based multilingual band Curry has released its four-track EP titled 'Suprabhatha', blending coastal Karnataka's cultural heritage with contemporary pop and electronic sounds ahead of a planned live performance in Bengaluru this October.

The project, which took five years to complete, marks the band's first major step into original Kannada music. Formed in 2020, the group consists of vocalists Ryo and Sheesh alongside vocalist and composer Kanasue. The EP brings together several Karnataka artistes, including violinists, and incorporates traditional elements from the coastal region.

Kanasue explained that the band members grew up listening to both Indian and Western music, influenced by Mangaluru's church and musical traditions. This blend shaped their approach to modern pop production while maintaining cultural themes.

The EP features four distinct tracks that explore coastal traditions and imagery. The track 'Seetha Kalyana' reimagines traditional Sanskrit wedding lyrics into an upbeat dance track, accompanied by a music video filmed on Mangaluru streets featuring a Pili Vesha performance. For the Afro-inspired song 'Nannavale', the video was shot at a traditional Guthumane, an ancestral Mangalurean home. The track 'Manase' explores a love story through the metaphor of a river meeting the sea, while 'Saanjh' incorporates Hindi into the coastal setting.

According to Kanasue, the move to write in Kannada reflects a desire to stay grounded in the band's lived experiences while independent Kannada music gains momentum across the state.

Following the release of 'Suprabhatha', Curry plans to release additional singles before the end of the year and expand its live schedule across the region, including an October return to Bengaluru.
