Madras Sappers Museum Opens to Public off Kensington Road in Bengaluru

The historic Madras Sappers Museum has opened its doors to the general public for registered visits at the Madras Engineering Group (MEG) Headquarters off Kensington Road in Bengaluru. The opening, which follows a directive from the Engineer-in-Chief of the Corps of Engineers, allows citizens to explore centuries of military history, weapons, and artefacts.
The museum is currently open to visitors on Wednesdays and Saturdays. To gain entry, members of the public must make prior enquiries and obtain permission by emailing [email protected].
According to Colonel (Retd) Uday Sankeshwar, Director of the Madras Sapper Museums and Archives, the museum was originally built in the late 1970s. It stands as one of the first military museums in the country to open to the public. Sankeshwar noted that the administration is working to make the space more interactive for younger generations by introducing computer touchscreens.
The museum displays historical items across three dedicated halls. Exhibits trace the history of the Madras Sappers from their origins as the Madras Pioneers. Visitors can view medals from historic campaigns, including the Carnatic War, Srirangapatnam, Egypt, and the Himalayas.
The collection also features diverse armaments, ranging from modern AK-47s and British-era weapons to Japanese katanas acquired during the Burma campaign. Other displays include the historical progression of official uniforms and a large world map tracing the global path of the Sappers.
For local history enthusiasts, the museum archives feature a detailed 1935 map of Bengaluru, illustrating how the city has transformed over the decades.
The museum has also collaborated with Bengaluru Prayana to host heritage walks. Furthermore, an internship program focusing on Military History and Military Psychology has commenced for local students from pre-university to PhD levels.
Tickets for the museum are priced at Rs 50 for adults and Rs 20 for children under the age of 10. Group entry rates range from Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,000 depending on the size of the group.
