KR Puram Police Book Four After Traffic Sub-Inspector Assaulted at Bhattarahalli Signal

A woman traffic police sub-inspector was seen on video slapping a law student following a road rage altercation at Bhattarahalli Signal in KR Puram, Bengaluru, on August 12, after she and her colleague were allegedly assaulted and verbally abused by four men.

The incident occurred around 8:45 am when the student, identified as Hemanth, and a car driver, Shreyas, were engaged in a road rage confrontation in the middle of the road, causing traffic congestion. Police Constable Manjunath, stationed at the traffic junction, asked them to clear the street to ease vehicular movement, which reportedly enraged Hemanth, who then verbally abused the constable.

When Woman Police Sub-Inspector Nayana D, attached to the KR Puram traffic police station, intervened to question Hemanth about the argument, he allegedly introduced himself as a lawyer and confronted her. A police officer stated that Hemanth directed vulgar abuse at the sub-inspector, leading her to slap him and hold him by his collar.

According to the First Information Report (FIR), Hemanth allegedly assaulted the officer during the altercation. Soon after, his friend Rahul arrived at the location, grabbed Nayana's right hand, pulled her, and assaulted her, causing an injury to one of her fingers. Nayana stated that she pushed him away in self-defence and instructed an assistant sub-inspector present at the spot to dial the emergency helpline 112.

The confrontation escalated further when Hemanth’s brother, Harshith Reddy, and father, Radhakrishna Reddy, arrived at the scene along with other individuals. In her complaint, Nayana alleged that the group body-shamed her, used derogatory language, and threatened her with consequences, including having her removed from service. She also stated that they photographed and videographed her while threatening to upload the clips to social media platforms.

The KR Puram police have registered a case against Hemanth Reddy, Rahul, Harshith Reddy, Radhakrishna Reddy, and others. The charges include Sections 74 (assault or use of criminal force against a woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 121 (voluntarily causing hurt), and 132 (assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from discharge of duty) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Police have issued notices to the suspects as part of the ongoing investigation.
