Karnataka to roll out digital patient records with OTP verification

The Government of Karnataka is preparing to roll out a statewide digital health record system, enabling doctors in Bengaluru and across the state to access patient medical histories electronically.
Under this new digital initiative, patients visiting government hospitals in Karnataka will no longer need to carry previous physical prescriptions or medical records. Instead, healthcare providers at these facilities will be able to view a patient's medical history through a unified digital system.
To ensure patient privacy, access to these electronic records will be strictly controlled. Doctors and healthcare providers will only be granted access to the digital files with the patient's explicit consent. This consent must be authenticated through a secure, One-Time Password (OTP) verification process before any data can be shared.
The initiative is expected to begin its official rollout early next year. According to preliminary details of the plan, the digital system combines Samast to facilitate the statewide tracking of patient data.
The primary goal of the digital-first system is to simplify and unify access to medical histories across Karnataka. By implementing this secure platform, the government aims to improve healthcare tracking and make data sharing more efficient for both patients and healthcare providers.
Once the system is active, patients will have their medical histories unified in one digital space, reducing the need for physical paperwork during hospital visits. The government, healthcare providers, and patients will all participate in this new digital-first healthcare tracking network.
