Karnataka Schools To Reopen On June 1 Without State-Level Launch Event

Schools across Karnataka will reopen for the new academic year on Monday, June 1, 2026, without the traditional state-level grand launch ceremony due to the absence of the Chief Minister and the School Education Minister. Instead of a centrally coordinated launch, individual schools will mark the day with local-level events.

The decision marks a significant departure from previous years, which featured large-scale celebrations. Plans for a statewide address by the Chief Minister to a "mega parent-teacher meeting" via video conference have been cancelled. Additionally, the formal launch of the Karnataka Public School (KPS) scheme, which was scheduled to begin with the Chief Minister laying a foundation stone in Shivamogga, will not take place.

According to state officials, school reopening events will now be managed locally by education department officials, district commissioners, or community representatives, depending on their availability. Meanwhile, local schools are preparing for the return of students with cleaning and minor repair works.

Regarding preparations, Suralkar Vikas Kishor, commissioner of the department of school education, stated that uniform and textbook distributions are underway. A review meeting held on Saturday, May 30, 2026, confirmed that the first set of uniforms had reached over 90 percent of schools, with the remainder dispatched from factories for delivery by the first week of June.

Textbook distribution is also progressing, with 80 percent of the book titles fully delivered. The department expects to deliver the remaining first-term books by June 5, 2026. Kishor noted that the initial school days will feature a bridge programme called "Setubandha," which does not require textbooks.

In the private sector, schools are planning welcoming activities for younger students. However, D Sashi Kumar, secretary of the Association of Managements of Primary and Secondary Schools of Karnataka, noted a drastic decline in private nursery admissions, attributing the drop to a falling birth rate and a rise in local playschools. Government schools are continuing special enrolment drives to boost student numbers.
