Karnataka ranks among India's best at shielding families from medical bills

Bengaluru — Karnataka has emerged as one of India’s best-performing states in protecting families from high medical bills, according to the latest National Health Accounts (NHA) estimates released last week.
In a country where a serious illness can wipe out years of household savings, the new data reveals that out-of-pocket expenditure (OOPE) for the 2022-23 fiscal year accounted for 29.2% of Karnataka's total health expenditure (THE). This figure is significantly lower than the national average, which stands at 43.4%.
The lower percentage indicates that families in Bengaluru and across the state experience better financial protection and are less vulnerable to catastrophic health expenditures compared to those in many other Indian states.
The NHA report published state-level indicators for 21 states across India. Among these monitored states, Karnataka ranked near the very top in limiting the direct burden of healthcare expenses on individual households. Only Uttarakhand, with an out-of-pocket expenditure share of 28.8%, and Jammu & Kashmir, with 29.7%, reported comparable or lower figures.
The findings highlight the performance of Karnataka's healthcare system and state authorities in keeping the direct out-of-pocket burden relatively low for its residents, safeguarding local families from the potentially devastating financial impact of medical emergencies.
