Karnataka Proposes Heritage and Cultural Foundation to Conserve One Lakh Sites

BENGALURU — The Tourism Department has proposed the establishment of the Karnataka Heritage and Cultural Foundation (KHCF) to systematically conserve the state's historical monuments, archaeological sites, museums, and cultural assets, while promoting local art and heritage globally.

A formal proposal prepared by the Department of Archaeology, Museums and Heritage will be placed before the state Cabinet shortly, according to Energy and Tourism Minister K J George.

The proposed foundation seeks to expand on the state's existing 'Adopt a Monument' initiative. It aims to establish a structured platform that brings together the government, private sector, and the public to participate in conservation, restoration, and infrastructure development at heritage locations.

A recent survey conducted across 239 taluks in Karnataka identified nearly one lakh historical monuments and archaeological sites. Minister George noted that the sheer scale and diversity of these assets require a sustainable, long-term financial mechanism for their upkeep.

To fund these conservation efforts, the foundation will aggregate Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) contributions, funds from Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), and public donations through a transparent framework.

Beyond preservation, the foundation plans to run programmes enabling younger generations to engage directly with historical monuments, art, and local traditions beyond school textbooks.

Tourism Department Secretary Ram Prasath Manohar stated that the KHCF is envisaged to provide donors with a structured mechanism to directly support specific sites of their interest, backed by transparent financial management and project implementation systems.
