Karnataka Halts Permissions for New Private PU Colleges from 2027-28 to 2029-30

The Karnataka state government has decided not to grant permission for establishing new private pre-university (PU) colleges across the state for three academic years, starting from the 2027-28 academic year up until 2029-2030.
The Department of School Education and Literacy released a draft notification to this effect and has invited public suggestions or objections regarding the proposal within a 15-day window.
The draft notification was published to bring an amendment to the Karnataka Department of School Education (pre-university) (academic, registration, administration and grant-in-aid, etc) Rules 2024.
The policy move addresses a key demand placed before the government by the Karnataka State Pre-University College Lecturers’ Association. The association had urged the education department to place a cap on sanctioning new private PU colleges because a significant number of PU seats remain vacant every year.
According to official data, Karnataka currently has more than 6,000 PU colleges operating across the state.
