Karnataka Government PU College Admissions Rise to 1.6 Lakh But Miss Target

BENGALURU — Admissions to government Pre-University (PU) colleges across Karnataka have risen to over 1.6 lakh students for the current academic year, marking an increase from the previous year. However, the state government has yet to meet its ambitious enrolment target of 2.5 lakh students, leaving a shortfall of approximately 90,000 admissions.

According to data from the department of school education and literacy, the current enrolment stands at around 66% of the state's total target. Last year, government PU colleges admitted 1,37,848 students. The current rise is part of a sustained effort by the department to boost enrolment in state-run educational institutions.

Of the 1.6 lakh students who have secured admissions so far, 99,028 transitioned from government high schools. Meanwhile, 65,852 students joined from other educational boards and private schools. Admissions for the academic cycle are still underway.

The progress towards the state's enrolment goal varies significantly by district. Kodagu and Mysuru have nearly met their targets, achieving 97% and 93% enrolment respectively. In contrast, districts like Chikkaballapur and Bidar have lagged behind, recording only 27% and 13% of their targets respectively.
