Karnataka Government Expands Bengaluru Second Airport Search to Harohalli

The search for a site for Bengaluru's proposed second international airport has expanded to Harohalli, where the state government has shortlisted three potential locations following directions from DK Shivakumar. Officials have been directed to focus on the region due to relatively lower land prices and the likelihood of easier land acquisition compared to other potential sites.

Industries and Infrastructure Development Minister MB Patil confirmed that the government is evaluating Harohalli taluk alongside previously considered locations. These include Somanahalli and Chudahalli on Kanakapura Road in Ramanagara district, as well as Goodemaranahalli near Nelamangala.

According to sources in the Infrastructure Development Department, each of the three shortlisted sites in Harohalli presents specific challenges. One site lies near a residential area, which could escalate rehabilitation costs and trigger local resistance, while expanding further away poses environmental constraints due to proximity to Bannerghatta National Park.

The second site in Harohalli faces layout complications because a portion of the land has already been acquired for the Satellite Town Ring Road. The third site features a hard-rock hill on part of the land, which could pose obstacles for runway construction.

The newly identified locations in Harohalli are situated roughly 18 km from the previously surveyed sites at Chudahalli and Somanahalli, which cover approximately 4,800 acres and 5,000 acres respectively.

An Airports Authority of India team is scheduled to visit Bengaluru to inspect the newly proposed site in Harohalli. A feasibility study is expected to conclude soon, with a final report anticipated by September before the government makes a final decision.
