Jayanagar Market Redevelopment Stalls as BDA Hands Project to BSCC

The redevelopment of the Jayanagar market remains abandoned halfway after years of stagnation, following resistance from local vendors who have refused to vacate their existing shops in the old building.

The project was originally undertaken after a major fire accident damaged the market complex in 2009. Following the incident, the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) was tasked with executing the comprehensive overhaul of the market area.

Under the original plan, the BDA was slated to construct four commercial towers. However, the agency managed to develop only one of the four proposed towers before work ground to a halt.

With construction stalled midway due to ongoing challenges and vendors declining to shift out of the older premises, the BDA halted work on the site.

The BDA has now returned the stalled project to the newly formed Bengaluru South City Corporation (BSCC), leaving the future execution of the remaining redevelopment in the hands of the civic corporation.
