Ireland's Ben Calitz Braces for T20I Series Against India in Stormont

BENGALURU — As India prepares for a two-match T20I series against Ireland over the upcoming weekend at Stormont, Irish cricketer Ben Calitz has expressed his excitement about facing the world champions in his team's own backyard.
The 23-year-old Canadian-born player, who has earned 10 caps for Ireland, described the opportunity to play against the world's top-ranked T20 side as a "big privilege" and a crucial learning experience.
Ireland hopes to leverage their home-ground advantage during the two matches. Calitz noted that his team is highly suited to and familiar with the conditions at Stormont, including the behavior of the wicket, the wind patterns, and the size of the ground. He emphasized that the team's focus remains on controlling their preparations and matching their strengths against India's highly skilled unit.
The upcoming series is also generating significant anticipation around 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who could become India's youngest international cricketer in the second T20I. If he debuts, Sooryavanshi will surpass cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, who made his international debut at the age of 16.
While the media coverage surrounding Sooryavanshi has intensified, Calitz stated that the Ireland camp is treating him like any other opponent. He explained that the team prepares plans and studies videos for all players, whether it is Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, or Sooryavanshi, though they remain ready to adapt their tactics on the field. Calitz did acknowledge, however, that the young player's rapid rise is "quite special" for the sport.
Additionally, the series spotlighted Rajasthan-born Jai Moondra, who moved to Ireland in 2021 on a student visa and made his international debut on Friday. Calitz, who has previously faced Moondra in the Irish domestic circuit, praised his teammate's hard work and unique skills, noting he is excited to finally play alongside him.
The two-match series will be broadcast live on the Sony Sports Network.
