IISc Bengaluru Sets Up Non-Profit Unit Under National Quantum Mission

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru has established the Foundation for Quantum Computing Innovation (FQCI) to bolster the nation's capabilities in advanced quantum technologies.

Set up as a Section 8 not-for-profit company, the initiative operates under the framework of the National Quantum Mission (NQM), which is implemented by the Department of Science and Technology.

The newly created entity is designed to serve as a collaborative hub, uniting academic research, advanced infrastructure, industry partners, and entrepreneurial talent. Its primary objective is to translate cutting-edge scientific research into indigenous quantum computing technologies and practical applications.

According to Shankar Kumar Selvaraja, a professor at IISc and the project director of FQCI, the initiative leverages national support to establish a competitive technological footprint. Selvaraja stated that the National Quantum Mission provides a unique opportunity to build a strong and globally competitive quantum computing ecosystem in India.

Selvaraja explained that the focus is on bringing together India’s research capabilities, advanced infrastructure, industry, and entrepreneurial talent to translate cutting-edge research into indigenous quantum computing technologies and applications. He added that the organisation aims to create an ecosystem where fundamental research, technology development, and real-world applications progress together.

In addition to fostering research and development collaborations, the FQCI is actively working to establish shared, world-class infrastructure. This shared facility will cater to quantum device fabrication, characterisation, testing, and technology development to support researchers and industry stakeholders across the sector.
