Home Ministry Forms Bengaluru Mobility Panel Under Priyank Kharge

The Home Ministry has constituted the Urban Mobility Mission Committee for Bengaluru (UMMCB) under Home Minister Priyank Kharge to tackle traffic and transport issues across the city, including key tech corridors such as Whitefield. The newly formed panel brings together government departments, private mobility providers, technology companies, academic institutions, and citizens to formulate coordinated, data-driven solutions.

The primary objective of the committee is to create an integrated Bengaluru Mobility Action Plan. This initiative will target multiple aspects of urban transit, including traffic management, public transport integration, first- and last-mile connectivity, parking facilities, pedestrian and cycling infrastructure, freight movement, and ongoing roadworks.

Representatives from major technology hubs—including Whitefield, ITPL, Outer Ring Road, Manyata Tech Park, Electronic City, Bagmane Tech Park, and Embassy Tech Village—have been included to represent commuter needs in major employment zones. Institutions such as the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), IIIT-Bangalore, and IIM Bengaluru, alongside civil society groups, will also participate.

Government representation on the committee spans the Greater Bengaluru Authority, Bengaluru Police, Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC), Metro, Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT), Transport Department, K-RIDE, and Public Works Department (PWD). Private sector members include transport platforms like Namma Yatri, Uber, Ola, Rapido, and MoveInSync, as well as logistics operators Swiggy, Zomato, Amazon Logistics, and Flipkart.

To execute its strategy, the committee will operate through seven specialized working groups focused on traffic and road safety, public transport integration, first- and last-mile connectivity, tech-cluster mobility, digital mobility and data, urban freight and delivery movement, and infrastructure coordination.

Specific tasks assigned to the panel include identifying congestion hotspots, enabling real-time data sharing across agencies, building a Bengaluru Mobility Dashboard, and improving access infrastructure surrounding Metro, bus, and suburban railway stations. The committee will also work to promote walking and cycling initiatives.

Home Minister Priyank Kharge stated that the key objective is to bring all relevant institutions, the private sector, technology companies, experts, and citizens onto a common platform to develop comprehensive solutions instead of isolated measures. The UMMCB will meet every three months, issuing quarterly progress reports and submitting an annual report to the state government.
