Hebbal to Airport Metro Stretch Set to Open by September 2027

The metro stretch connecting Hebbal to the Kempegowda International Airport is scheduled to open for commercial operations by September 2027, Greater Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda announced on Saturday. The complete Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) Blue Line network will become fully operational by March 2028.

The Blue Line, which spans from Central Silk Board to the airport, is being constructed across two distinct phases: Phase 2A from Silk Board to K.R. Puram, and Phase 2B from K.R. Puram to the airport. While the full corridor was previously slated for completion by December 2027, the deadline has been revised to March 2028.

According to Mr. Gowda, commuters will gain access to sections of the corridor ahead of the full line's completion. Phase 2A, which previously held a December 2026 completion target, is now projected to open by mid-2027. Ahead of that, trial runs are scheduled to begin between K.R. Puram and Iblur in October, followed by trial runs between Central Silk Board and Iblur in December.

For Phase 2B, the section extending from Hebbal to the airport will be ready by September 2027. However, the critical connecting segment between Nagawara and Hebbal faces a later timeline.

“Completing works between Nagawara and Hebbal has several challenges, including building metro stations, as an interchange station will come there,” Mr. Gowda said, explaining that this specific stretch will open in March 2028 alongside the overall commissioning of the line.

In addition to the Blue Line updates, Mr. Gowda provided details regarding the Pink Line corridor. The 7.5-km elevated section of the Pink Line, extending from Kalena Agrahara to Tavarekere, is structurally complete and currently awaiting clearance from railway authorities for its inauguration.

The underground portion of the Pink Line, stretching from Tavarekere to Nagawara, remains under active construction. Work on that segment is expected to continue for another six months, with full operational readiness anticipated after March 2027.
