GPS Tracking Pilot Launched in 36 Garbage Autos in HSR Layout

A pilot project to install GPS tracking systems in garbage collection vehicles was launched on Friday in HSR Layout, aiming to improve transparency and streamline solid waste management across Bengaluru South City Corporation (BSCC) limits. The rollout was inaugurated by BSCC Commissioner KN Ramesh alongside Bommanahalli MLA Satish Reddy.

The initiative is being implemented in association with Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited (BSWML), the non-governmental organisation Let’s Be The Change, and Intel. While there are over 200 waste collection vehicles functioning throughout the Bommanahalli zone, the tracking system has been installed in 36 goods autos as part of the initial phase.

Through the newly installed GPS devices, civic authorities will monitor daily waste management operations. The system is equipped to track vehicle movements, verify adherence to assigned routes, record collection timings, and provide real-time updates on the current location of the autos.

According to Commissioner Ramesh, the pilot project will be conducted over an eight-month period in the Bommanahalli zone. Based on the operational outcomes and overall success during this trial window, civic authorities plan to scale up and expand the tracking system to other municipal corporations.

Alongside vehicle tracking, the project incorporates ‘Sevak’ technology to monitor waste segregation and weight at the household level. Under this mechanism, households that properly segregate their waste will receive performance ratings on a scale ranging from 0 to 5 stars.

The system is also designed to identify occupants of houses who fail to hand over their waste during daily collection rounds. Civic officials noted that this identification data will assist municipal marshals in taking enforcement action and imposing fines on non-compliant households.
