GPS Tracking Launched for Bommanahalli Garbage Autos in HSR Layout

Bengaluru South City Corporation has launched an eight-month pilot project to GPS-track door-to-door garbage collection autos in the Bommanahalli zone. The initiative was officially launched on Friday by Corporation Commissioner K N Ramesh and Bommanahalli MLA Satish Reddy at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Stadium in HSR Layout.

The pilot programme aims to enhance monitoring and efficiency in household waste collection. Under the initiative, GPS devices have been fitted into 36 of the 208 garbage collection autos operating across the Bommanahalli zone. The devices enable real-time tracking of vehicle movements, collection routes, operational timings, and geographic locations throughout the day.

The project is being jointly executed by the civic corporation, Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited (BSWML), the non-governmental organisation Let’s Be The Change, and technology company Intel. Civic authorities noted that if the pilot proves successful over its eight-month duration, the GPS tracking mechanism will be expanded to cover other zones across the corporation.

In addition to monitoring vehicle routes, the initiative integrates ‘Sevak’ technology to assess waste collection directly at the household level. This technology will track both the weight and the segregation status of waste collected from individual homes. Under this mechanism, households that practice proper waste segregation will receive performance ratings of up to five stars. Conversely, marshals will be deployed to identify and track households that consistently fail to hand over segregated waste.

Addressing the gathering, Commissioner Ramesh emphasised that source segregation remains crucial to resolving a significant portion of Bengaluru’s broader solid waste management problems. He urged local residents to cooperate with civic staff and refrain from dumping unsegregated garbage in public spaces.

Following the launch event, Ramesh and Reddy conducted an inspection of ongoing works at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Stadium premises. Concluding the inspection, the Commissioner instructed civic officials to take necessary steps to strengthen security arrangements at the stadium.
