GPS Devices to Track 208 Waste Auto-Tippers Across Bommanahalli

The Bengaluru South City Corporation has directed that all 208 garbage auto-tippers operating in the Bommanahalli zone be equipped with GPS tracking devices by September 10 to eliminate local waste black spots. The expansion of the 'Brain Above' GPS mapping system across the zone will enable residents to monitor collection vehicles assigned to their streets and assist civic authorities in managing waste.

Bengaluru South City Corporation Commissioner K N Ramesh set the deadline following a pilot project carried out in the Bommanahalli Assembly Constituency under a Corporate Social Responsibility initiative by Intel Technology India Pvt Ltd. In that initial phase, GPS tracking devices were installed on 36 auto-tippers on August 13, leading local residents and non-governmental organisations to report a reduction in roadside black spots due to consistent door-to-door collection.

Civic officials have been instructed to launch full-scale tracking from September 11, after completing device installations and route mapping across all nine wards in the zone, including HSR Layout, Hongasandra, and Mangammanapalya. Through the tracking application, residents will be able to monitor the vehicles assigned to their specific streets and view collection details.

For narrow lanes where larger vehicles cannot easily enter, auto-tippers will halt at designated nearby points for 10 minutes while workers alert residents by blowing whistles and collect waste. Contractors have also been directed to deploy auto-tippers at night near high-density black spots to prevent illegal dumping.

Under the enforcement plan, marshals will first sensitise street vendors before issuing fines to repeat offenders. Pourakarmikas and drivers will be tasked with clearing existing black spots five days a week until 2 pm. Furthermore, the civic body will link contractor bill clearances directly to compliance verified by the GPS tracking data.
