Global Chess League Season 4 to Open in Bengaluru on September 5

Bengaluru is set to host the fourth edition of the Global Chess League starting on September 5, bringing the international mind sport competition to the city. The league, organised as a joint venture between Tech Mahindra and global chess governing body FIDE, is aiming to bring the game closer to the common man.

The upcoming season in Bengaluru has drawn fresh global investment, including from former Spanish football defender and World Cup winner Gerard Pique. Pique has acquired a stake in the franchise Fyers American Gambits, whose ownership group also includes former India cricketer R. Ashwin.

GCL chairperson Peeyush Dubey stated that Pique's entry demonstrates the expanding international profile of the tournament. Dubey noted that most commercial sponsors associated with the league during its previous edition in Mumbai have returned for the new season, alongside a roster of new entrants.

This will be the second consecutive year that the tournament is staged in India, following earlier editions held in Dubai and London before moving to Mumbai. Dubey explained that team owners, predominantly companies based out of India, expressed a clear preference to hold the league domestically where their key audiences and customer bases are located.

Organisers selected Bengaluru after evaluating the city's engagement with the game and its fit with Tech Mahindra's technology background. Dubey noted that the choice of host city was finalised in coordination with team franchises and the broader chess ecosystem, adding that he expects the Bengaluru edition to draw an even stronger response than the Mumbai event.

According to the organisers, the league reached over 211 million people across media platforms during its previous season. Ahead of the September 5 launch, the tournament has already generated significant interest from local schools, institutions, and chess clubs across Bengaluru.
