G Parameshwara Appointment Under DK Shivakumar Revives Karnataka Power Tussle Fears

The elevation of G Parameshwara as the Deputy Chief Minister in Chief Minister DK Shivakumar’s government in Bengaluru has revived concerns of an internal political power struggle within the Karnataka state leadership. The newly appointed executive pairing has brought back memories of past internal rivalries and competing centres of authority within the Congress party in the state, raising questions about whether the new arrangement will function as a cooperative duet or a political duel.

The transition of leadership in the state government has raised significant questions about how the power dynamic will play out between the Chief Minister and his deputy. The state of Karnataka has a long and documented history of competing leadership figures within its ruling administrations. This historical friction in the party's state branch has consistently raised concerns about the balance of power when multiple senior leaders hold high-ranking positions.

During the second tenure of former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, DK Shivakumar served as the Deputy Chief Minister. During this administration, Shivakumar was widely seen by many observers as a parallel centre of authority, which created tension within the top leadership hierarchy.

A similar political dynamic previously played out during Siddaramaiah’s first tenure as Chief Minister, which took place between the years of 2013 and 2018. During those years, G Parameshwara served as the Karnataka Congress president.

In his role as the state party president, Parameshwara engaged in a prolonged battle with the then-Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. The dispute between the two leaders focused heavily on key administrative appointments and the overall organisational control of the party.

The return of both G Parameshwara and DK Shivakumar to top leadership roles in Bengaluru has now revived fears of another internal power tussle. Observers worry that the historical friction between competing leaders in the state government could impact the stability of the current administration.
