FSSAI Initiates Legal Action Against Bengaluru Firm Over Misbranded Infant Food

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has launched legal proceedings against Bengaluru-based British Life Sciences Private Limited after finding safety violations in its infant food products. The action comes as part of a wider enforcement drive conducted by the authority targeting companies manufacturing infant nutrition to verify regulatory compliance.

During an inspection of the company's premises in Bengaluru, food safety officials discovered and seized a significant quantity of misbranded infant food articles under the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The regulatory agency cited the serious nature of the violations and the potential health risks posed by non-compliant products to infants and young children as the reason for initiating legal steps.

In addition to the seizure of misbranded stock, authorities ordered the destruction of approximately 3.7 metric tonnes of expired infant food articles in compliance with court directions. The expired inventory was safely disposed of to ensure it could not be reused, diverted, or reintroduced into the commercial food supply chain.

Explaining the enforcement measures, the regulatory authority noted that appropriate legal proceedings were initiated against the firm following the inspection and subsequent findings. The regulator emphasised that safety standards for young children remain a critical priority during its nationwide compliance inspections.

British Life Sciences is a subsidiary of British Biologicals and specialises in maternal and child nutrition products. The firm describes itself as one of the largest manufacturers of medical nutrition formulations globally, producing healthcare solutions across pediatric, diabetic, geriatric, cardiovascular, and hepatitis categories.
