Food Safety Team Inspects Canteens at Vidhana Soudha, MS Building in Bengaluru

A Karnataka Health Department Food Safety Division team resumed inspections across Bengaluru on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, flagging severe hygiene lapses and seizing expired food at canteens located in major government premises, including Arogya Soudha on Magadi Road, Vidhana Soudha, the Legislators’ Home, and the MS Building.

During the drive, officials inspected the canteen at the Health Department's headquarters at Arogya Soudha on Magadi Road. The inspection team seized expired food products, including idli rava and coconut powder, from the kitchen. Officials found that food items were not stored according to Food Safety and Standards Authority of India guidelines and noted that pest control measures had not been carried out, leaving the premises in an unhygienic condition. The Food Safety and Drug Administration department stated that an advisory notice was issued and legal proceedings would be initiated before the Adjudicating Officer.

Officials also inspected a Nandini parlour on the Arogya Soudha premises, where violations regarding labelling requirements were detected, resulting in an advisory notice.

In total, four hotels and food establishments operating within government building complexes were inspected during the operation, with multiple deficiencies recorded. At a privately operated restaurant inside the Legislators’ House, located adjacent to Vidhana Soudha, inspectors discovered unhygienic conditions, including the presence of cockroaches in the kitchen, leading to an advisory notice.

At the MS Building premises, inspectors found an eatery operating under unhygienic conditions and ordered it to be closed immediately. The food business operator submitted an undertaking confirming that the identified deficiencies would be rectified. The establishment will be permitted to reopen only after securing clearance from the Commissioner in accordance with the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and applicable regulations. The department confirmed that further action would be initiated against the operator.

The Food Safety and Drug Administration department stated that food business operators must strictly adhere to statutory standards, warning that any lapses in food quality, hygiene, storage, labelling, or handling will attract legal action. The drive is part of wider food safety inspections being conducted across all zones in Bengaluru Urban District and the Greater Bengaluru Area, where officials recently inspected 60 three-star and five-star hotels and sent 77 food samples for laboratory testing.
