FDA Scrutiny Prompts Cancellation of Koramangala Peptide Party

A scheduled 'Peptide Party' in Koramangala planned for August 29 was cancelled after the Karnataka Food and Drug Administration raised regulatory and safety concerns, according to a public advisory issued by the department on Friday.

The regulatory body stated that authorised representatives of Upsurge Labs LLP, the organisers of the event, communicated the decision to cancel the programme following an inquiry by the department. The organisers had formally requested additional time to submit documentation related to the gathering, which was granted by officials.

The cancellation followed a formal notice from the Karnataka Food and Drug Administration seeking extensive details about the peptide preparations proposed to be promoted, supplied, or administered at the Koramangala venue. The authority sought comprehensive information regarding the chemical composition, dosage, sourcing, manufacturer details, batch numbers, labelling, and the overall regulatory status of each product. The department also asked whether the items in question were classified as drugs, new drugs, investigational drugs, or products approved for different medical indications.

Regulators raised serious concerns regarding various health and therapeutic claims linked to the products, including assertions related to weight loss, muscle growth, anti-ageing effects, diabetes, obesity, hormonal impacts, inflammation, and athletic performance enhancement. The FDA directed the organisers to furnish scientific evidence to substantiate all such claims.

Additionally, the department instructed the organisers to clarify the exact method of distribution, questioning whether products would be sold, provided free of cost, distributed as samples, or directly administered to attendees, including through injections. If any administration was proposed, the FDA mandated the submission of details regarding participating healthcare professionals, medical supervision protocols, participant consent procedures, and emergency medical arrangements.

The regulatory authority also asked for Food Safety and Standards Authority of India documentation in the event that any products were being presented as nutraceuticals or health supplements. Following the inquiry, the department advised the public to take note of the event's cancellation.
