Eight Companies and 14 Entities Sign Pacts for 5,000-Acre KWIN City Project

Eight leading companies and 14 other entities have signed agreements to set up facilities in KWIN City, Large and Medium Industries Minister M.B. Patil informed the Karnataka Legislative Council on Friday. The list of participating institutions includes global universities that have established operations in Bengaluru, such as the University of Liverpool at the Alembic City complex in Whitefield and the University of New South Wales at Manyata Business Park.

Responding to a question raised by member K. Shivakumar in the Council, the Minister stated that KWIN City is being developed across 5,000 acres between Doddaballapura and Dabaspet. Development work on the first phase of the project is currently under way, and the tendering process has been completed.

Among the major corporate entrants, Toyota Kirloskar Motor Private Limited is setting up a state-of-the-art innovation centre at the site. Mr. Patil noted that the planned facility will be of a standard that the automaker does not possess even in its home country of Japan. In addition, global-standard medical institutions, the Indian Institute of Science, and a campus of the National Law School of India University are slated to come up at the project.

Several leading international universities have entered into agreements with the State government. These include Imperial College London, the University of New South Wales, the University of Liverpool, Lancaster University, La Trobe University, and Flinders University. Mr. Patil said Imperial College London will establish an innovation hub at the location, adding that the government wants institutions already operating elsewhere in the city to set up campuses in KWIN City as well.

The Minister explained that some foreign universities have requested buildings tailored to their specific requirements under a build-to-suit model. The State government is considering constructing customized facilities to enable these institutions to operate on the premises for the next 30 to 40 years.

Mr. Patil added that only the eligibility and credentials of institutions will be evaluated when allotting facilities. KWIN City will feature residential facilities and common amenities, with the process of allotting space to reputed institutions scheduled to take place over the next year.
