Doddakammanahalli Neighbours Booked for Killing Pet Dog in Gottigere

A family of four allegedly killed their neighbour’s nine-year-old dog with an iron rod in Doddakammanahalli near Gottigere, just hours after the animal gave birth to two puppies, because of its barking.

The incident took place between 8.30 pm and 9 pm on Friday. The pet parent, 48-year-old Maheshwari, has lodged a complaint with the Hulimavu police against her neighbours, identified as Balaraj, his wife Kanikamma, and other members of their family.

According to Maheshwari, who works as an attender at a private school in the city, her Pomeranian dog named Julie whelped two pups around 10 am on August 14. Over the next ten hours, the neighbours grew agitated by the dog's barking and allegedly launched an attack.

Maheshwari, her husband, and their son were also allegedly attacked by the family when they intervened and questioned them. Both newborn puppies have since died, with one succumbing on Monday and the other on Tuesday.

Recounting the attack, Maheshwari alleged that Balaraj struck the dog on the head with an iron rod, causing it to collapse and die on the spot. Traumatised by the event, she stated that she has been unable to return to her Doddakammanahalli home and is temporarily staying at her brother’s residence in Mylasandra.

The Hulimavu police have registered a case against the named individuals under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, and relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

A police officer confirmed that the matter is under investigation and that notices have been served to the accused persons directing them to appear before the investigating officer. No arrests have been made yet in connection with the case.
