DK Shivakumar Urges Women Entrepreneurs to Take Up Leadership Roles

Karnataka leader D K Shivakumar called on women entrepreneurs to step into leadership roles across the state's growth sectors during the inauguration of the fifth edition of 'Together We Grow—International Women Entrepreneurship Day'. The event was organised by the Ubuntu Consortium of Women Entrepreneurs Association.

Addressing the gathering, Shivakumar praised women for their resilience, sacrifices, and ability to build enterprises by overcoming significant obstacles. Drawing parallels from mythology, he remarked that Sita's character in the Ramayana was far greater than Lord Rama's due to her exemplary struggles, adding that women are creators and vital role models in society.

Shivakumar emphasised that women's leadership is necessary across all tiers of governance and public life, extending from gram panchayats to the Parliament. He stated that the Karnataka government remains committed to empowering women, noting that there is no limit to what they can achieve when turning daily challenges into possibilities.

Highlighting the state government's welfare initiatives, Shivakumar pointed to the impact of the Shakti scheme, which provides free travel for women across Karnataka in government buses to enhance self-reliance. He also referenced the Gruha Lakshmi scheme, under which 1.22 crore women across the state receive Rs 2,000 each to assist with family management, adding that women are not confined to the kitchen.

Speaking on gender equality, he urged society to move away from the traditional preference for male firstborns and stressed the importance of imparting strong values and discipline to children. He cited his own daughter as an example of an empowered woman balancing family and business responsibilities.

He further referenced Congress leader Sonia Gandhi as an example of endurance and leadership despite personal tragedies, noting her decision to decline the prime ministership in favour of economist Manmohan Singh. Concluding his address with references to Draupadi and Kunti from the Mahabharata, Shivakumar reiterated that women possess immense potential and must continue to step forward into leadership positions.
