Debate Over Vande Mataram Is Unnecessary, Says Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy

Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy stated on Sunday that discussions and questions being raised about the national song Vande Mataram are unnecessary. He made these remarks while addressing reporters in Guledagudda in Bagalkot district on August 16, 2026.
Clarifying his position on the matter, Mr. Kumaraswamy emphasised that there should be no controversy regarding Vande Mataram. He pointed out that the song played a significant role in inspiring the country's freedom struggle and noted that it was written prior to the National Anthem. He maintained that there is no problem in singing or celebrating the song across the nation.
The Union Minister further remarked that there is an existing law regarding showing respect to Vande Mataram, adding that the law ought to be followed by everyone.
His comments came in response to questions concerning allegations of disrespect shown towards the song by members of the Gandhi family. Addressing the issue, Mr. Kumaraswamy referenced a clarification issued by Congress leader Sonia Gandhi regarding an incident in Delhi.
According to Mr. Kumaraswamy, Sonia Gandhi clarified that she had not asked anyone to stop the singing of Vande Mataram. Instead, she stated that she had only asked a staff member to arrange a chair for All India Congress Committee (AICC) president Mallikarjun Kharge.
Reiterating his stance on the controversy, Mr. Kumaraswamy concluded that raising questions and engaging in discussions over the song remains entirely unnecessary.
