Cooke Town Residents Clear 15 Garbage Black Spots Through Active Monitoring

Over the last year, the Cooke Town Residents' Welfare Association (CTRWA) in Cooke Town, Bengaluru, has successfully improved local solid waste management and tackled the neighborhood's garbage menace. Through active monitoring of waste collection and close collaboration with civic officials, the association has helped eliminate numerous garbage black spots and streamline the local waste disposal system.

To ensure accountability, members of the CTRWA have been conducting ground inspections as early as 5:30 AM. According to CTRWA President Raja Shanmugan, team members regularly check if all waste-collection auto-tippers have arrived at their designated spots. Previously, many auto-tippers would be marked as present on paper without physically arriving at the location.

To resolve this issue, the association worked with civic marshals, who now post photos with GPS tags to verify the physical presence of the auto-tippers. This intervention has significantly reduced fraudulent attendance and brought transparency to the daily collection process.

In addition to monitoring collection vehicles, the CTRWA introduced measures to streamline how residents report garbage dumping. The association instructed local citizens to file formal complaints on the Sahaaya app rather than posting random pictures of garbage black spots.

Ronaldo Rego, the CTRWA Solid Waste Management Lead, explained that random photos did not serve a practical purpose. By routing issues through the Sahaaya app, the association could track the complaints and perform systematic follow-ups.

Initially, some complaints on the app were closed by officials without any actual measures being taken. In response, the CTRWA followed up with civic authorities to demand details on the specific intervention measures. This persistent follow-up has led to a more reliable system, and the overall number of complaints has decreased as solid waste management in the area improved.

These combined efforts have yielded visible results for the Cooke Town community. Over the last 10 months, 15 garbage black spots in the area have been successfully cleared and beautified. Residents have reported cleaner roads and more consistent waste collection across the neighborhood. Additionally, the Bengaluru North City Corporation targets 20 black spots a week as part of its wider civic efforts.
