Class 8 girl dies by suicide in Madiwala after school staff allegedly beat and fine her

A 13-year-old schoolgirl died by suicide on Wednesday night at her house in Madiwala near Marasur, under the Suryanagar police limits in Bengaluru, after allegedly facing physical abuse, fines, and humiliation from her school staff over incomplete homework.

The victim has been identified as Madhushree, a Class 8 student of the Government High School in Marasur. The tragedy was discovered on Thursday morning when Madhushree’s mother went to her room to wake her up and found her hanging.

Before taking her life, Madhushree left a note in which she accused a teacher and a non-teaching staff member of the school of abusing and punishing her. The note detailed that the punishment was handed out because she had not completed her school homework.

According to the note, Madhushree was allegedly beaten up by the teacher 10 times. She also accused the teacher of collecting a fine of Rs 20 from her as a penalty for the incomplete homework.

In addition to the teacher, the note also named a non-teaching staff member at the school. The police stated that this staff member was accused of abusing the Class 8 victim while serving mid-day meals to the students.

Unable to bear the humiliation of the physical beatings, the fine, and the abuse, Madhushree took the extreme step on Wednesday night.

The local Block Education Officer (BEO) is currently looking into the matter. The Suryanagar police confirmed that formal notices have been issued to the individuals whose names were mentioned in the note left by the victim. The police investigation into the incident is ongoing.
