Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar Signals Shift by Wearing Luxury Brands in Bengaluru

Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has sparked local discussion in Bengaluru by openly displaying luxury fashion accessories, signaling a shift in how political figures present their wealth to the public. Shivakumar, who is identified as the richest Chief Minister in the country, has recently been seen wearing designer scarves from luxury brands Louis Vuitton and Gucci, paired with a Rolex watch.

The display of wealth was particularly prominent during Shivakumar's recent inspection of a local garbage segregation plant, where he wore a luxury Louis Vuitton scarf. The presence of the global luxury accessory stood in stark contrast to the surrounding realities of civic infrastructure, sanitation workers, and urban waste management.

This open display of luxury represents a departure from traditional Indian political optics. Historically, politicians in India cultivated an image of simplicity, wearing khadi, white kurtas, and well-worn sandals. This performance of austerity and modest lifestyles was designed to signal solidarity with ordinary citizens, conveying the message that the leader was one of them. Even when leaders possessed wealth, it was concealed to avoid potential political damage.

However, this era of concealed wealth appears to be fading. Today's wealthy politicians are increasingly sending a message of personal success without attempting to hide it. In an era dominated by social media, public disclosures, and relentless scrutiny, maintaining an illusion of frugality when a politician possesses significant wealth is increasingly seen as hollow.

While some observers question whether such luxury displays widen the psychological distance between elected officials and the public, others view it as a reflection of Bengaluru's modern identity. As a city shaped by startups, venture capital, global corporations, and rapid wealth creation, the local environment increasingly associates power with success, scale, and executive authority. In this context, the Chief Minister's wardrobe may function as a new form of political branding.
