Chandra Layout Police Arrest Three for Kidnapping and Assaulting Woman Over Unpaid Debt
The Chandra Layout police in Bengaluru have arrested three individuals, including two women, after a 30-year-old woman was allegedly abducted, held captive for two days, and assaulted over an unpaid debt. The victim was safely rescued by law enforcement personnel following a credible tip-off.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Nazrath Begum, Reshma Banu, and Suhail. According to the First Information Report (FIR), the victim had borrowed ₹50,000 from Nazrath under a weekly-interest arrangement and ₹1 lakh from Reshma about two years ago. The complainant stated that she had been paying ₹5,000 each week to Nazrath but missed payments for two weeks, while interest on Reshma's loan had not been paid for six months.
The woman alleged that Reshma had repeatedly demanded repayment and issued threats, which led her to move to her mother’s house and later to a friend’s residence. On August 27, Nazrath contacted the victim and asked her to come to her house on the pretext of paying her some money. When the victim arrived with her son, Reshma, her husband Suhail, and two other men allegedly entered the house and locked the door.
Suhail demanded the outstanding money and allegedly assaulted her. The complainant told the police that she and her son were then forcibly taken in an autorickshaw to Reshma’s house in Kumbalgodu. At that house, she was allegedly assaulted with a stick and kept confined in a room, with the physical assaults continuing the following day.
The victim further alleged that Nazrath stripped her and recorded a video on her mobile phone, threatening to circulate the footage if the money was not repaid. The complainant stated that she was subsequently taken to a lawyer near a market and coerced into signing certain documents before being brought back to Reshma’s house.
On August 31, the victim managed to step out of the room after being permitted to use the toilet. Police personnel arrived at the residence shortly thereafter and rescued her. She was brought to the Chandra Layout police station, where she detailed the sequence of events.
The Chandra Layout police registered an FIR under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act. An investigating officer stated that the accused and the complainant are friends and that a financial dispute led to the episode, adding that police are verifying all claims made by the woman.
