Centre Received No Proposal for Second Bengaluru Airport, Says MP PC Mohan

Bangalore Central MP PC Mohan stated on Monday that the Karnataka government has not submitted a proposal to the Union government for the construction of a second airport in Bengaluru. Mohan highlighted the issue after raising a parliamentary question in the Lok Sabha regarding the project's status, including proposed sites along Kanakapura Road and Kunigal Road.

In his Lok Sabha query, Mohan sought details on the current status of the second airport proposal, the extent of land identified at each site under consideration, and the expected completion date for the feasibility study. He also requested timelines for granting final approval, starting construction, and details regarding any expansion planned at the existing Kempegowda International Airport.

Responding to the inquiry, Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol clarified that the Airports Authority of India (AAI) had already sent a pre-feasibility study report to the Karnataka government. However, Mohol stated that the Union government has received no proposal thereafter under the Greenfield Airports Policy from either the state government or any airport developer for a second airport near Bengaluru.

Providing data on the existing Kempegowda International Airport, Mohol stated that its current annual passenger handling capacity is 51.5 million, with an average daily handling capacity of 141,000 passengers. He noted that the average daily passenger footfall in FY 2026-27 till June 2026 is approximately 123,800.

Mohol added that terminal capacity at the existing airport is expected to reach 80 million passengers per annum by 2030. This expansion includes Phase 2 of Terminal 2, which will raise its capacity from the current 25 million to 45 million passengers per annum.

The AAI has already conducted pre-feasibility studies across three sites. In March, Karnataka Industries Minister MB Patil announced that the state government had floated a tender for firms to bid toward preparing a feasibility and strategy report following the AAI's site inspections.
